In 2015, legendary jazz musician and founder of Jazz at Lincoln Center Wynton Marsalis decided to launch his own record label Blue Engine Records. A modern jazz label, the positioning for Blue Engine was to acknowledge the rich heritage of jazz, while creating an identity that sits squarely in the twenty-first century.

We started by creating a symbol and wordmark referencing elements of the JALC identity crafted by Paula Scher, then we developed a comprehensive palette of blue duotone overlays to establish an ownable visual language using the extensive photo library of Jazz at Lincoln Center — bringing the label into the modern music landscape and laying the tracks for the future of jazz.
